Yarns
We carry primarily natural fiber yarns- that is, yarns made of wool, alpaca, mohair, cashmere, silk, cotton, linen, and hemp. We think that natural fibers are generally less polluting and more sustainable. Besides, all synthetic fibers were made in imitation of the natural thing - with some aim for easier care and comfort (as well as a desire for profit). We do have some yarns that are synthetic - or man-made, from plant-based sources, primarily rayon, tencel (a patented type of rayon using a less harsh and toxic method), and rayon from bamboo. We also include yarns with nylon, mostly in the sock-yarn category. The addition of nylon improves the strength, elasticity and durability of the sock.
We also are interested in bringing you as many 'local' yarns and fibers as possible! In this era of exported manufacture, it is thrilling to find the Made in the USA and the Made in Montana labels on well-manufactured goods made of quality materials, which are often at very affordable prices.
